Allen Spool Mill Building
Mystic, Connecticut

Built in 1880, the Allen Spool and Printing Company occupied this three-story building on the east side of the Mystic River in downtown Mystic. According to local history and evident in its structure, the building was constructed by shipwrights during the inclement winter months. The completed project will include office and medical office space on the first floor, and the second and third floors will be reserved for luxury apartments featuring views of Mystic and the Mystic River. This is the first project in the Town of Stonington to reach construction under the Industrial Heritage Reuse District zone, designed specifically by the town to encourage adaptive reuse of outmoded industrial buildings.
Kent + Frost prepared the site master plan and led the successful re-zoning and site plan application process. As part of the planning process, research by Kent + Frost exposed important information on the building’s original architectural features and historical significance. Site and architectural details like signage, lighting, railings and porches make reference to this historical legacy.
