Clarke County Veterans Memorial Plaza
Athens, Georgia
Brian Kent’s winning design was chosen from over 100 entries submitted to an open competition for the design of a memorial to local veterans from four wars: WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The project occupies a thirty foot wide pedestrian walkway that spans a downtown block between the county courthouse and its parking garage in Athens, Georgia. A series of concrete and steel gateways divides the plaza into individual spaces where veterans from each war are honored. The gateways are evocative of the neo-classical architecture for which Athens is known as the “Classic City”. The plaza provides a shady and inviting pocket park with ample seating for downtown visitors and workers and enables cross-block pedestrian access. The project was completed in 1992.
