Hygienic Art Park
New London, Connecticut
The Hygienic Art Park is a 7,000 square foot space on Bank Street in the heart of downtown New London. The park is owned and operated by Hygienic Art, Inc., a nonprofit artist coop and public gallery that occupies the adjacent building.
The Landscape Architect led a charrette-based planning process with community stakeholders and collaborated with artists and allied professionals to compose a space that accommodates an intensive schedule of active programming. The underlying theme of the planning process is that the “park is the art”.
Designed as a holistic composition of space defining edges, specific sculptural elements, accent lighting and purposeful plantings, the park draws visitors from the Bank Street sidewalk through a sequence of spaces to the rear amphitheater.
